Urban Transit Systems

Putera KL.jpg

This page is being built at present and will concentrate on what are often regarded as "light" rail systems, running above ground rather than either underground (see "Subway Systems") or trams (see "Trams"). We shall be featuring systems in various cities including Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, Bangkok and London. To start with, here's a tiny fragment of the DLR system.

In London the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) has been a huge success, linking the City of London with the new Docklands area that has been regenerated and packed with high-rise buildings (including the impressive Canary Wharf), expensive apartments, a few decent restaurants and the City Airport. At the time of its planning there was enormous scepticism about its future and about whether those who worked in the City of London would be prepared to relocate. Those fears were unfounded. Public transport is, of course, essential to any urban regeneration and it proved to be cheaper to put a railway above ground than to extend the London Underground (though that does serve part of the area). The DLR made its debut in 1987. Trains are driverless.
